Papertrade revenue exceeds Circle? Actually, it's just a "liquidation harvesting machine"

The Papertrade protocol generated $57.16 million in revenue within 7 days of launch, surpassing Circle in a single day, with 92% of revenue distributed to stakers, revealing the derivatives game flywheel of liquidation losses being redistributed.

On October 16, 2026, according to revenue statistics from decentralized finance data platform DefiLlama, derivatives gaming protocol Papertrade recorded $7.49 million in protocol revenue in a single day, surpassing stablecoin issuer Circle for two consecutive days and ranking second across all protocols and public chains, behind only Tether. Data shows that within 7 days of launch, the protocol recorded a cumulative nominal revenue of $57.16 million and distributed approximately $52.76 million in total to PAPER stakers on the platform, with a dividend distribution ratio as high as 92.30%. Unlike traditional decentralized exchanges, which rely on channel fees skimmed from trading volume, the protocol's strikingly large revenue scale stems from its unique liquidity pool (LP) liquidation redistribution mechanism.

The Illusion of Book Revenue Created by Excess LP Transfers

Under DefiLlama's statistical framework, the capital flows classified by Papertrade as "protocol revenue" consist of three distinct components: the 2% fee when traders close positions and realize profit or loss, the 2% liquidation fee deducted from margin when users are liquidated, and excess funds directly transferred to stakers after the liquidity pool balance exceeds the $5 million threshold.

This statistical scope means that the so-called consecutive record-breaking protocol revenue is overwhelmingly detached from the regular service fees generated by matching trades and is directly composed of the loss principal left behind by counterparty traders liquidated in extreme leverage games. When retail traders or leveraged players frequently suffer long or short liquidations on the platform, the losing funds are directly injected into the platform's liquidity base; once the total size of that base pool exceeds the $5 million cap, all excess principal is deemed by the system to be current-period "revenue" and transferred into the dividend pool.

Calculated from the data ratios, of the cumulative $57.16 million in total revenue generated within 7 days of launch, $52.76 million flowed back to the staking side at an average daily intensity of $7.537 million, accounting for 92.30% of the total, while protocol developers retained only about 7.70% (about $4.4 million) as their cut. The high figures collectively reflect a specific book characteristic in which high-turnover speculative principal is rapidly converted into dividends.

The Dividend Closed Loop of Losers Receiving Equity and Winners Being Skimmed

According to Papertrade's official mechanism design, the protocol has built a closed negative-sum game flywheel through tokenomics.

At the trading base layer, losing users, while losing margin, receive the protocol governance token PAPER proportionally based on the amount of their losses. This setup provides speculators, at the level of mental accounting, with the buffering expectation that "losers receive platform equity," incentivizing losers to transfer tokens into the staking pool in hopes of recovering their principal through subsequent dividends.

On the capital distribution side, profitable traders withdraw counterparty funds from the liquidity pool, and the protocol charges a fixed 2% fee on all profits, half of which (1%) is allocated to developers, while the other half (1%), together with all excess liquidity funds exceeding the $5 million cap, is distributed indiscriminately to all stakers who have locked PAPER. This mechanism forms a capital redistribution loop in which "winners take the losers' liquidity, the platform skims winners' profits to subsidize stakers, and stakers divide subsequent liquidation losses."

Mechanism Fragility Under Depleted Gaming Liquidity

A model that relies on continuous trader liquidations as its main source of dividends is highly dependent on an uninterrupted injection of new trading principal. During one-sided market trends or periods of extreme one-sided positioning, if the platform experiences concentrated profitable runs, the liquidity pool fixed at $5 million at the base layer will come under extremely intense pressure for insolvency payouts.

When market trading sentiment cools and liquidation frequency declines, causing the liquidity pool to be unable to remain above $5 million, the capital pump delivering excess dividends to stakers will immediately stall, directly causing the previously several-hundred-percent annualized yield to plummet off a cliff. Once the yield falls to zero, token holders who earlier acquired and staked PAPER through loss compensation will face a stampede of unstaking and selling for cash, exposing the endogenous fragility of decentralized derivatives gaming when there is no real counterparty order book.

As on-chain arbitrage gaming deepens, whether Papertrade can maintain excess dividends at the level of several million dollars per day, along with its real contract lock-up volume and counterparty retention data, will become evident in on-chain trading trajectories after this week.
