"Terrifying data" far exceeds expectations: U.S. September PPI data surges significantly

PANews October 15 news: The U.S. September PPI year-over-year came in at 6.3%, the highest since May 2026 and above the market expectation of 5.3%. The U.S. September PPI month-over-month came in at 1.3%, far above the market expectation of 0.5%. U.S. September retail sales month-over-month came in at 0.8%, above market expectations.

Even excluding volatile food and energy, core PPI still rose 0.7% month-over-month and 5.0% year-over-year, highlighting the extremely strong resilience of underlying price pressures. PPI has long been regarded as a leading indicator transmitted to final consumption. Because some components will be directly included in the Personal Consumption Expenditures (PCE) price index, which the Federal Reserve values most, key data such as a 5% single-month jump in airfare prices will undoubtedly greatly push up the PCE reading scheduled for release on October 29, further blocking the path for prices to fall back to the long-term 2% target.
