Technical breakdown, bull retreat: the gold market is suffering from "multiple hits"

Gold faced a severe technical stress test, with prices falling below the 200-day and 50-day averages and $4,000 a key support. Record speculative buying overhangs, China's premature position reduction, and soaring real interest rates have pushed up the cost of ownership.

The gold market is facing the most severe technical stress tests in the short term. Just weeks after a record influx of speculative buyers, the technical side of gold prices has deteriorated across the board, with a large number of new long positions hanging above the market, and the stampede risk should not be underestimated once the bulls concentrate to escape.

Gold is currently hitting a cathartic line, and the main trend line that has defined the current uptrend since 2025 is being directly tested. Gold has fallen below the 200-day EMA and is falling below the 50-day EMA. The rapid collapse of the technology set the market's sights on the key support level of $4,000.

At the same time, the macro environment is also shifting at a disadvantage. Front-end real interest rates have risen sharply, the US dollar has strengthened, gold ETF outflows have accelerated, and the opportunity cost of holding zero-yielding assets has risen sharply. The Market Ear analysis pointed out that the structural bull logic of gold may still hold, but the trading pattern in the short term is becoming "quite ugly".

The technical side is completely broken, and $4,000 is a critical line of defense.

The price of gold is currently under the superimposed impact of multiple technical pressures. According to LSEG Workspace data, the price of gold is not only running below the 200-day MA, but is currently falling below the 50-day MA, and directly testing the main trend line that has supported the current bull market since 2025.

Analysts pointed out that if the gold price closes below the trend line, it will constitute a major technical deterioration signal, and $4,000 will be the next support level that needs to be closely monitored. Once the position is lost, $3,887 will be the next line of defense, followed by the $3,500 area previously marked by the World Gold Council.

According to Goldman Sachs Trading Desk information, sovereign and institutional buyers' orders have been laid out around $4,000, which provides some support for the position, but it remains to be seen whether it can hold.

A record speculative buy into "a barrier lake hanging overhead"

The market is particularly alarmed that the current accumulation rate and scale of long positions are historically rare.

According to cot position data, when gold prices began to fall about a month ago, speculators bought record-sized gold futures in nominal terms within three weeks, and this purchase was not concentrated in one category, but all kinds of speculators were fully involved.

This means that a large number of new long positions have a higher opening cost than the current market price, and there is no doubt that the price trend is up, once the market turns to the downside, these positions become a potential fuel for accelerating the decline.

The core question is: how fast will these bulls choose to leave?

Liquidity risks exacerbated by early position reduction in the Chinese market and the holiday window

Signals from the Chinese market are also noteworthy. According to Goldman Sachs Gold Trading Desk data, during the trading hours of the Shanghai Futures Exchange (SHFE), the bulls were closed at the opening of the day, and the outstanding contracts decreased by about 11,000 lots, a decrease of about 2.6%.

Goldman Sachs pointed out that due to the large EFP arbitrage position between domestic SGE bulls and SHFE bears, SHFE's nominal position data may overestimate the true speculative bull size, but Chinese speculators as a whole are still in a net bull position.

More critical is the calendar factor: the Shanghai Futures Exchange will be closed for a week from 1 to 7 October due to the National Day holiday. Against the backdrop of volatility in Iran and interest rates, speculators have little incentive to maintain large long exposures during the week-long market closure. The market expects the pre-holiday position reduction pressure to continue further.

Real interest rates soar, gold opportunity costs skyrocket

Similarly, the headwinds at the macro level cannot be ignored. According to LSEG Workspace data, front-end real interest rates have risen sharply in the past few weeks, and 2-year real interest rates have risen back to more than two-year highs, and the upward margin of inflation expectations is far from enough to offset the shock.

Goldman Sachs analyst Privorotsky pointed out that this is an extremely unfavorable environment for a zero yield asset. While gold can hedge against inflation, fiscal pressures, and geopolitical risks, the opportunity cost of holding gold begins to significantly erode its appeal when cash assets suddenly offer substantial real returns.

At the same time, the negative correlation between gold and the US dollar has remained highly stable over the past year, which means that trading gold is quite similar to trading the US dollar. The strength of the US dollar has further suppressed the rebound in gold prices.

Options market signal divergence, volatility continues to fall

The performance of the options market presents some internal contradictions. Gold typically has an upward skewed volatility structure, and call options demand has historically been higher than put options. According to Goldman Sachs data, the current demand for call options is still relatively strong, but the implied volatility of gold has continued to decline.

This divergence means that the options market has not adequately priced the sharp uptrend in gold, and the market's expectations of a sharp rebound in gold prices in the short term are not strong.

Structural bull logic is unbroken, but marginal buyers are retreating

It is worth noting that all of the above pressures are short-term in nature, and the long-term structural support of gold has not wavered. Central banks continue to increase their holdings of gold, with an average monthly increase of about 91 tons, about five times the pre-2022 level, and the demand for safe havens due to long-term fiscal sustainability also remains.

However, the crux of the short-term problem is that marginal buyers are evacuating. The realization of hawkish interest rate hike expectations is accelerating the breakdown of the macro policy hedging logic that previously drove gold prices up; higher real interest rates are also impacting interest rate-sensitive ETF investors, and global gold ETF outflows are already accelerating.

Structural bull tales may still be around, but in the current time window, it is short-term speculators looking for exports that dominate the price trajectory.
